Erie County Summer Youth Program

The Buffalo and Erie County Workforce Development Consortium Summer Youth Employment and Training Program (SYETP) incorporates basic employment skills, integrated learning experiences, and work maturity skills to provide a strong connection between summer learning and school year progress. The goals of the program are to provide economically disadvantaged youth between the ages of 14 and 21 with employment, and to:
  • Improve school retention and completion
  • Provide a support network for participants
  • Develop basic employability skills, including
The ability to read, write, perform arithmetic and mathematical computation, listen and speak. The ability to think creatively, make decisions, solve problems, visualize, reason and know how to learn. Personal qualities of responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management, integrity and honesty.

ALL SYETP applicants are required to complete an interest inventory and information form which is used during the individual interview and assessment meeting. Based on their work experiences, if any, their schooling, hobbies, interests and skills, the applicants are matched with employment and educational opportunities that are best suited to their career objectives.

Overall SYETP applicants are pre-tested either by their home school, or are given an achievement test administered by the staff of the summer program. Test results are then used as assessment tools in determining the mix of services participants will receive from the program. Educational activities provided may include remediation through one-on-one tutoring in reading and/or math, CPR training, acquiring computer skills, or the employability skills mentioned above. Those receiving remediation are also post tested to document results of their learning achievements.

Copies of their educational portfolios are sent to the participants’ schools, to be shared with their teachers. This exchange of information is valuable in helping to build on the youth’s experiences and expose him to new learning situations. SYETP participants are also contacted in the future and referred to private sector employment opportunities that WDC has to offer, through it’s “Youthworks” employment initiative.
